How to transfer/move free space from D to C drive?

Many people ask if it is possible to transfer some free space from D: drive to C:, because if it is possible, you can change size of the partitions without recreating partition and reinstalling operating system, so you can solve the low disk space problem quickly and easily. The answer is definitely yes and here I’ll show you how to move free disk space from D to C in Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP and Server 2016/2012/2008/2003 (R2).

Select a reliable program

Different with read-only software, to move disk space, the partition software will modify parameters in file system, move files location and update system info in operating system. Not every program has the ability to move disk space without data loss. Nobody likes to see system failure or data loss.

Here I recommend NIUBI Partition Editor, a program integrated unique Roll Back protection technology, which is able to roll back the server to the status before resizing automatically and rapidly, even if power failure or any other hardware issue occur, so you don’t need to worry about Operating System and data safety. Furthermore, it is 30% – 300% faster than ANY other tools, because of its unique file-moving algorithm.

It is very easy to move free space from D to C, just drag on the disk partition bar.

The first step is shrinking D to release free space:

Step 1: Download NIUBI Partition Editor, right click D: drive and select “Resize/Move Volume“.

Drag to resize

Step 2: In the pop-up window, drag the left border rightwards to generate free Unallocated space.

Shrink d drive

Drag to resize

Click OK and back to the main window, where 20GB Unallocated space created behind C: drive.

Unallocated space

The second step is transferring free space into C drive:

Right click C drive and select “Resize/Move Volume” again, in the pop-up window, drag the right border rightwards to hold the Unallocated space.

Extend C drive

Hold unallocated space

Click OK and back to the main window, where C drive extended to 60GB by holding the 20GB free space from D. Press Apply on top left to execute, done!

What about RAID, VMware and Hyper-V?

NIUBI Partition Editor supports VMware, Hyper-V and all types of hardware RAID with any RAID controller. Note: do not break RAID array or do other operations in the RAID controller, just follow the same steps. As I said above, this software is much faster than other tools, which is strictly tested. In some situations, it is 500% faster. Remember data safety and time are most important to a server.

If there is not plenty of free space in volume D, you can transfer free space from any other volumes in the same disk.
